Synopsis
Life is about more than survival; it’s about overcoming.
Ripped away from a stable two-parent home at the tender age of seven, Charles Brown, Jr., encountered abuse, feelings of abandonment, and a home life threatened by poverty’s snare. However, a deep rooted fear and adoration of God planted in him by his paternal grandmother allowed Charles to not only overcome adversity but to excel in the face of it.
The Overcomer is everyman’s story. It reinforces that when we fail to submit to the call of God our disobedience opens the door to generational curses that can affect our children and our children’s children. But, as reflected in Charles’ life, the act of repentance and the will to overcome after every failure results in the forgiveness and blessing of God. The Overcomer is proof that life is not granted for us to simply survive. We are called to overcome.
Excerpt
Going to the wake that night was hard. The coldness of the building and the life within all of us was surreal. Pops’ spirit had ascended into Heaven leaving an empty shell of his earthly essence behind. The sight of his lifeless body in a coffin caused me to swell with emotion. Incapable of maintaining my composure, I allowed the tears, which I had tried so desperately to hold inside, to stream freely down my face.
The words son, take care of my baby because I won’t be around this time next year seemed to have been spoken a lifetime ago when, in fact, only four short months had passed. As the tears streamed down my face, Leyah stood behind me, placed her hands around my waist, and nuzzled her head into my back just below my shoulder blades. This is not about your feelings; it’s about your wife’s a voice from within chastised. I turned to Leyah, hugged her as gently and lovingly as possible and said, “Honey, I am so sorry.”
